Although there are many places in France that sport magnificent beaches and lakes, the Pyrenees Orientales stands out among them.
The region is a paradise for water sports adventurers. Kilometres of unspoilt coastline, rocky creeks and inlets, numerous beautiful rivers and lakes make the Catalan Mediteranean one of the most wonderful water sports destinations in the world.
The region boasts 10 seaside resorts, all with excellent beaches and watersport facilities : Port-Barcarès, Torreilles, Sainte Marie La Mer, Canet en Roussillon, Saint Cyprien, Argelès Sur Mer, Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls Sur Mer, Cerbère. Saint Cyprien boasts the the 2nd largest marina on the Mediterranean coast, not to mention the 3rd largest in Europe.
The Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Reserve has plenty to offer diving and snorkelling aficionados, thanks to a 250-metre-long underwater trail that has been specially created in a sheltered bay. You swim along the surface with fins, mask and snorkel following the trail in relatively shallow water (less than 5 metres deep), protected from the currents in a safe environment. The trail has 5 stages, marked by buoys, each of which has an information board that explains the ecosystem around it. Qualified divers will find several dive sites around the reserve.
The coastline and etangs prove to be mecca for Windsurfing and Kite Surfing enthusiats of all levels with a world championship competition "Mondial du Vent" held in nearby Leucate-La Franqui every year.
Diving schools and equipment hire are readily available in all the resorts. Boats can be hired (with or without a permit) from Port Argéles.
